Smart Campus Network Upgrade and Converged Bearing Solution for a Multinational Manufacturing Enterprise
Client: A Multinational Precision Manufacturing Group (China Headquarters & R&D Center)
Industry: High-end Manufacturing
Core Challenge: The legacy network (Gigabit core, Fast Ethernet access) could not support the smart factory (IoT device access, 4K industrial vision inspection), HD video conferencing, seamless wireless roaming, and a new zero-trust security architecture. Operations were complex, hindering business innovation.
Solution: A converged solution based on high-performance Ethernet, featuring an all-optical campus backbone and Wi-Fi 6E wireless.
Core Value: Built a high-bandwidth, highly reliable, easy-to-operate, and future-proof converged network, serving as the core nervous system supporting its "Smart Manufacturing" and "Smart Office" digital transformation.
I. Client Background & Pain Point Analysis
The client's China campus includes R&D buildings, production workshops, office buildings, and logistics centers, with complex network requirements:
Production Network Bottlenecks: 4K industrial cameras, AGVs, and numerous PLCs/sensors deployed in workshops caused congestion on Fast Ethernet access switch ports, leading to delays in production data回传, affecting real-time quality control and scheduling.
Poor Wireless Experience: The legacy Wi-Fi 5 network lacked capacity in dense areas like meeting rooms and exhibition halls, with frequent roaming drops, impacting mobile inspections, video conferences, and visitor experience.
Inflexible Network Architecture: Production, office, and guest networks were physically isolated. Establishing a new production line or reorganizing a department required rewiring and reconfiguring switches, with a response cycle of several weeks.
High Operational Pressure: Separate management for wired and wireless networks made fault isolation difficult, requiring multi-party coordination. There was a lack of security visibility and policy control for IoT terminals.
II. The Solution: All-Optical Backbone + Wi-Fi 6E Wireless Converged Architecture
We designed and deployed a converged network with "High-Performance Enterprise Switches" at its core, an "All-Optical Interconnect" as the backbone, and "Wi-Fi 6E Wireless" for ubiquitous coverage.
1. Network Architecture Overhaul: Three-Tier All-Optical Ethernet
Core Layer: Deployed two 100G Enterprise Switches with virtualization stacking technology for active-active core redundancy, providing tens of Tbps of switching capacity.
Aggregation Layer: Deployed 25G Enterprise Switches in the main equipment room of each building. These connect to the core via 10G/25G SFP28 single-mode fiber optical modules and single-mode fiber, building a high-speed, interference-resistant optical backbone.
Access Layer:
Office & R&D Areas: Deployed 2.5G PoE+ Switches, connected via Cat6a copper cabling to provide 2.5G access to desktops and PoE++ power to numerous Wi-Fi 6E Access Points and IP phones.
Production Workshops: Deployed Industrial PoE Switches to withstand high temperature and vibration, connecting to industrial APs and IoT gateways via M12 interfaces, and uplinking via fiber.
Fiber to the Desktop/Machine (FTTD/FTTM): In high-end design departments and critical production lines, deployed 10G SFP+ optical modules and media converters for end-to-end 10G optical connections directly to workstations and servers.
2. Ubiquitous Wireless & Intelligent Operations
Wireless Deployment: Wi-Fi 6E Access Points in office areas utilize the 6GHz band for high-density, low-interference coverage. Industrial Wi-Fi 6 Access Points in workshops and warehouses meet requirements for high-speed mobility and interference resistance. All are managed by centralized Wireless Controllers.
Intelligent Operations: Deployed the AmpCon-Campus Management Platform for unified monitoring, bulk configuration, and auto-topology generation of all wired/wireless devices and optical module status. Combined with network data analytics, it enables RF optimization and rapid fault isolation.
3. Security & Service Convergence
Virtual Network Convergence: Enabled VXLAN on switches to converge the traditionally separate production, office, guest, and IoT physical networks into one physical network with logical isolation and flexible policy distribution.
Endpoint Intelligent Identification: Integrated with the security system, switches can automatically identify the type of connected IoT devices (e.g., cameras, sensors) and steer them to the appropriate virtual network with tailored policies, enabling secure isolation and controlled access.
III. Deployment Outcomes & Quantifiable Benefits
Network Performance Leap:
Backbone bandwidth increased 100x; access bandwidth increased 2.5-10x. 4K industrial vision inspection data transfer time reduced from seconds to milliseconds.
Wireless average speed increased 5x; key meeting areas achieved zero packet loss during roaming; video conferencing freeze rate decreased by 95%.
Significant Improvement in Operational Efficiency:
New production line network deployment cycle shortened from weeks to 3 days.
Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) for network faults reduced from over 4 hours to under 30 minutes.
Predictive maintenance of optical modules prevented a potential production data transmission interruption caused by link attenuation.
Enhanced Business Agility & Security:
Virtual network technology reduced the network configuration time for launching new services (e.g., a temporary R&D project) from days to hours.
Achieved precise identity identification and policy control for over 5000 wired/wireless terminals across the campus, improving security incident response speed by 80%.
Optimized Total Cost of Ownership (TCO):
The optical backbone can be smoothly upgraded to 50G/100G in the future by replacing optical modules, protecting the investment.
More energy-efficient new equipment and intelligent power-saving strategies reduced overall network energy consumption by approximately 25%.
IV. Client Testimonial
"This network upgrade was not just 'road repair,' but rather 'laying a superhighway and an intelligent traffic system' for the digital future of our entire China operations. Now, whether it's the massive amounts of sensor data from the workshops or跨国 4K collaborative design in meeting rooms, everything flows unimpeded on this network. It has transformed from a support system into a core driver of our business innovation and efficiency improvement." — Group China Region IT Director
